I think Laurent added this feature, can't remember why. I'm CCing him.

Well, you could simply check if KNotes is running beforehand, either with
  dcop | grep knotes
or with
  dcop knotes
and then check "$?" to be 0.

hm. This should only happen on the very first start of KNotes. If you deleted 
the empty new note and restarted KDE it should not reappear. Could you please 
check?
