I changed my /etc/X11/Sessions/kde to

#!/bin/sh
xrdb -nocpp -merge - << EOF
Xft.dpi: 96
Xft.hinting: 1
Xft.hintstyle: hintmedium
EOF

/usr/kde/3.2/bin/startkde

This fixed all my font troubles.  I believe gnome forces you to use 96 dpi as well, \
at least thats what it shows in the gnome-font-properties.
