I see the problem now...

It is not enough to just uncheck the "Show Main Toolbar"
in the settings menu. I had to choose 
Settings -> Configure View Profiles...
and save my profiles with the toolbars I want showing.

It is not the most "intuitive" way (to me) but I am able
to get it set up the way I want.
