We sort of do option 3 already - we attempt to increase the soft limit by the number \
of extra descriptors we require, subject to the constraint imposed by the hard limit. \
If you do need more decriptors then increasing the limit in your shell before \
starting valgrind should ensure there are more available to your program as the \
reserved descriptors will be further up in the descriptor space.
