I have kmail in my Gnome startup folder in Red Hat Fedora Core Release 1 (Yarrow).
The program is still running when I exit the desktop and (do a CLEAN) reboot
or shutdown. However, there are times when the program (or desktop) may lockup, and I \
exit using CTRL-ALT-BKSPC. I wonder if this is what contributes to kmail creating the \
"phantom" messages?

Usually I exit the system *cleanly*, either selecting reboot, or shutdown.

Nevertheless, when kmail restarts, I still have numerous "phantom" messages.
These show subject headings of messages that have been already read and deleted.
However, clicking on these phantom messages show "no subject" as the headers,
and one is obliged to expunge these. Also, if there are mails in the queue, they
cannot be sent out, until these phantoms are removed from the outmail box.
