Thanks! I'll look into it. Still I would be interested if there is a difference 
with using OBJECT. It should work with >= 3.1.1, eg for applet 'myapplet' in 
dir 'appletdir':

DATA="myapplet"> 
    <PARAM NAME="code" VALUE="myapplet" > 
    <PARAM NAME="codebase" VALUE="appletdir" >

(If it still has problems, there is something wrong with the jvm communication. 
If it works however, it's the APPLET implementation)
