Does it also fail if you change <APPLET ...>...</APPLET> to <OBJECT 
TYPE="application/x-java-applet" ...>...</OBJECT> (works only in >= 3.1.1)? 
If so, could you attach the html page with the applet source (or send it to me 
privately)?
