Well, having multiple versions was not a decision I made.  The issue is that 1.6.1 ships/shipped 
with XFree86-4.2.1 (as I mentioned earlier, updating to -current (4.3.0) would force me to 
recompile all of KDE and more) and I've installed software which depends or uses features of 
newer libraries (than 4.2.1). For instance, pkgsrc installed: 
 
freetype2-2.1.4     font rendering engine and library API 
Xft2-2.1nb4         Library for configuring and customizing font access 
 
which are all newer versions used by thrid part software (and installed in /usr/pkg).  Apparently 
these packages where not installed or used by KDE - it used the 4.2.1 libraries - and Kopete 
seems to find these newer versions (But not libjpeg in /usr/pkg also ??).
