Just a PS to my previous message, but by "Other programs" I mean other non kde 
programs, such as Nautilus, LinNeighborhood, etc.  trying to access any directories or 
files in any smb share, via smb:// in kde programs fails of course.  We are using samba 
2.2.7, but I couldnt tell you the samba version on the working gentoo machine, because I 
am at work at the moment.
