Ooops, wrong stack trace! The stack above shows the situation when
XOpenDisplay is called correctly. The XOpenDisplay(":0.0") case
looks like this:

# XOpenDisplay () from /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6
# __glXRegisterExtensions () from /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1
# __glXRegisterExtensions () from /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1
# driCreateDisplay () from /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1
# __glXInitialize () from /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1
# glXGetConfig () from /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1
# qt_init_internal(int*, char**, _XDisplay*, unsigned long, unsigned long) ()
  from /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3
# qt_init(int*, char**, QApplication::Type) ()
  from /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3
# QApplication::QApplication(int&, char**, bool) ()
  from /usr/lib/qt3/lib/libqt-mt.so.3
# KApplication::KApplication(bool, bool) () from /usr/lib/libkdecore.so.4
# main ()

We have now KDE->Qt->GL->X11 interaction and that looks too
complicated to me, I will use my workaround and do not feel
like going deeper in this bug hunt.
