You're possible right wrt the compilation/environment. I am current using a 
RedHat compiled Qt and have tested both the RedHat edition of KDE and a copy I 
compiled myself. Both had the same problem - so maybe its the RedHat Qt. 
 
Anyway; I found this bugreport http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41431 . It 
seems to be the same problem, but the included patch do not apply at all, so I 
am putting the problem on hold 'till KDE 3.1 comes out.
