Look at the $KDEDIR/include/arts/artsmodules.idl. Is there a entry named 
Synth_STEREO_COMPRESSOR? If not you have a problem. If yes I have a 
problem...
Did you restart aRts after doing make install in kdemultimedia?
Are you able to load effects with noatun?
