Interesting! I get this with IMAP folders, and local Maildir folders too.

Recently I set up kmail to point to the local Maildir folder for Inbox, and
IMAP for the rest of the folders. Checking in to the Inbox (Maildir), there
were a fair few messages of this type (Unknown in all fields).

If only IMAP is used, it leaves these rogue messages there, but they can be
deleted, without harm. I suspect that something's been munged between what
KMail thinks is in the folder, and what the imapd (Exchange) thinks is there.
Normally this happens when something's been deleted already, and the folder
is rescanned.

What's somewhat more alarming is when dealing with local folders. On startup
with Maildir delivery to a local directory (~/Maildir), Kmail would see
nothing but "Unknowns" in there. On exit, nothing else could access those
folders - Kmail appeared to have nuked the messages, thus killing all inbound
email for the day. As Courier-IMAP uses Maildir as well, they both need to
share the same store, and play well with each other; KMail seems to fail
where Outlook Express and Evolution just work fine.

So, rule of thumb is obviously, no local folders because we cannot trust it to
handle these correctly. But it would be nice if it had some mechanism to
self-check its results; corrupting the message store is unhelpful.

Cheers

Richard
