No wonder. This has obviously been fixed yesterday! I updated
my kicker sources every hour and suddenly it didn't hang
any more. (It was the commit that also fixed the taskapplet
bug that was introduced yesterday or the day before.)

Also the ugly flicker that I complained about in the bug report
is gone. It happened often when leaving kicker and was presumably
related to the #36293 bug.

Time to close #36293.
