Package: kdesktop
Version: KDE 2.2.2
Severity: normal
Installed from: Compiled From Sources
Compiler: gcc 2.95.3
OS: Linux
OS/Compiler notes: Slackware Linux 8.0, kernel 2.4.13

for no apparent reason kde freezes on my system and I am unable to use Linux, this \
has happened 3 times on my linux box.

First I thought it was the kernel and it's APM console blanking. I rebuilt the kernel \
but the problem was still there. I figured it was the screen saver, since this is \
when the system would lock up entirly, so I turned off the screensaver.

But then as I was browsing the web using mozilla build 0.9.7, the kde desktop froze \
once again:

a) the keyboard went dead

b) the mouse pointer was working, I could move it

c) mouse buttons were not functioning
, I couldn't bring up a menu

because the keyboard was dead I could not kill the XServer

the problem is not with mozilla 0.9.7 since I have used it with no problems for hours \
using the fvwm2 windows manager

it seems like the kde system is trying to do some function periodically that is \
causing the system to get hang? I am not sure, but all three hangs seemed to have \
occured around the same duration after starting kde.

what controls the keyboard and mouse click inputs? could it be the DCOM server?

the hangs have occured twice when the system was idel, and once when the system was \
in use

this is a nasty bug since it can't be reproduced at will, but it's critical enough \
for me to stop using kde for development purposes!

also the 1st halt happened when I was using kde that was installed using the \
slackware packages from the slackware site

the last two halts happend on a fresh install linux system and kde built from source
