Okay, that was the important part :)
There is a limit of 1MB for thumbnail generation. For formats like PNG, GIF 
etc. this might be rather low, for JPG, EPS and some others a 1MB file can be 
gigantic (in image dimension). Some PNG files can be too, but that's less 
often. Anyway, as there is no way to determine the image dimensions before 
loading it completely with QImageIO, this limit serves to prevent excessive 
memory usage. For KDE 3 this will be at least configurable, maybe there's 
even a way to get the dimension info beforehand and limit the previews based 
on image size, not just on filesize.
For now, you can raise the limit by editing ~/.kde/share/config/konquerorrc 
(hope it's really that one...), section "PreviewSettings", value 
"MaximumImageSize", in bytes.

Downloading images from my Digital
camera (Canon Powershot G1) and browsing
the download directory will leave some
of the pictures wo. a thumbnail.
The pictures will open OK in ie. Image Viewer
and I haven't been able to find any
differences in the JPG files for the ones
thumbnailed and the ones wo. thumbnail.

Wish:
- A selection "Generate Thumbnail" when
  rightclicking on the file in Konqueror.
