Surely we need.  For example, I needed some libs to get rid of
UnsatisfiedLinkError.

Zaurus seems binary compatible with Linux on iPaq (Familiar, probably).  For
example, some ipkgs for iPaq works on Zaurus without any modification
(including even X applications).  So I think Java is not an exception, in
terms of running GUI stuff on X.

There seems not so much information about that, so basically I'm doing try
and error by myself.  And I'm definitely not a Linux Guru. :)
