I just did this too.  So far so good - doesn't hang like usbdnet did.   
Maybe I screwed up the install, but I still had to add that line to 
/lib/modules/2.4.21/modules.usbmap (changed for usbnet).    The ifup is 
not configurable for usb, but it's easy to copy and modify the ifcfg 
under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
