Again, apologies as this is getting increasingly OT, but unfortunately 
using WindowMaker with gnome-session isn't good for me since I don't use 
gnome-panels and therefore don't have access to the gnome 'logout' button.

This means that when you exit windowmaker, the X session keeps running 
without a window manager ...

The two solutions seem to be:

1. Get windowmaker integrated with gnome-session in such a way that 
exiting windowmaker ends the X session.

2. Get windowmaker to close xmms nicely before exiting without using 
gnome-session.

Is there some resource I can use to achieve either (most probably (1)) 
without further disturbing this peaceful little mailing list?
