LOS ALAMOS NATIONAL LABORATORY RESEARCH LIBRARY
DIGITAL LIBRARY TECHNOLOGIES ENGINEER

The Los Alamos National Laboratory's Research Library is seeking a creative 
team player to join our Library Without Walls digital library software 
development team.  The Research Library is a pioneering and internationally 
renowned technical library that develops leading-edge electronic products 
and services to support the Laboratory's world-class science.

Several aspects of the LANL Research Library make it a unique and exciting 
place to work:
    * A large-scale local data repository loaded and managed by the 
Library, including:
        * 6,000+ electronic journal titles from 410 publishers; over 7 
million articles locally loaded
        * 6,000 electronic books
        * Nine locally loaded databases with over 70 million citations
        * Rapidly growing collections of electronic conference proceedings
        * Local repository of Los Alamos sponsored research
    * An internationally renowned R&D team which integrates leading edge 
Digital Library research into the production tools the Research Library uses
    * Personalization services
    * A variety of both locally developed and commercial software tools to 
provide integration of resources
    * An active outreach and education program designed to market, educate, 
and actively communicate with Laboratory customers
As one of three Library Without Walls teams, the Development Team has 
responsibilities that include creating and maintaining tools for digital 
library applications, and working in-depth with a wide variety of metadata 
formats to ingest various data streams into our local repository.  The team 
also works closely with the Library Without Walls Prototyping Team, testing 
and scaling cutting edge DL frameworks and software, and integrating 
successful components into production systems.  Challenges include 
utilizing and integrating new technologies that must scale well in a 
rapidly changing environment. Applicants should have experience working 
with digital collections and be comfortable working with a variety of 
metadata formats using existing and emerging industry standards.

Requirements:
    * Ability to generate technical design for projects or project 
components and to apply standard structured programming techniques to meet 
functional specifications
    * Solid knowledge of Java / Java tools and Perl.  Experience with c++ 
helpful.
    * Demonstrated experience with XML / XSLT and associated XML toolsets.
    * Experience with relational databases, such as MySQL or Oracle, and SQL
    * Good understanding of technology & standards (OpenUrl, OAI, Dublin 
Core, etc.) relevant to digital library development and how this impacts 
access to and management of information in libraries
    * Experience benchmarking application and application-related system 
performance on UNIX (Solaris/Linux) systems
    * 3-5 years of professional library/information industry experience
    * Effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and 
personal initiative

Education:
Master's degree in Information Science or Computer Science or equivalent 
combination of education and relevant work experience
