I watch both 720p and 1080i HD channels fine with the following:

# number of video buffers
# numeric, default: 500
#engine.buffers.video_num_buffers:500

# default number of video frames
# numeric, default: 15
engine.buffers.video_num_frames:22

That being said, this is surely a case of YMMY.
