	For a long time, the only codecs that came with a typical Linux
installation were integrated into a program called XAnim, the de facto
Unix media player. Thus far, Linux distros do not come packaged with
codecs the way Windows does. That may change in the future as
ffmpeg/libavcodec seems to be working up to the de facto codec library
that many apps rely on.
