I've added a screen shot from my prototype translucent window code; there's
no extension yet, I just forced override-redirect windows to have a 
constant alpha of 0xa0 (about 2/3).

I'm still thinking about the semantics of this system while writing a 
paper for ALS; that will be done on Thursday (the ALS paper deadline) and
posted to that web page for your amusement.
