Just to follow up:

I've figured out why hardware opengl acceleration wasn't working with
my Matrox G400.  As I said before I had this working, then did a
debian upgrade, then it was broken.

It started working again after I installed glibc22 (which is in the
debian testing pool now, not in stable - no doubt this plays into why
the upgrade "broke" me).

Now I'm running a 2.4.5 kernel (without FB support for now, but I may
go back and try that now), 4.0.3, no mga_hal driver and the warnings
about the Video BIOS still are printed, but acceleration works anyway.

BTW:  4.1.0 still has unresolved syms when doing XFree86 -configure
for me, as it has all along with glibc21 & glibc22.
