For the topic of how to combine various fonts in a flexible way,
you may be interested to read my paper (coauthored with Marc-Antoine
Parent): "Font Selection and Font Composition for Unicode" at
http://www.ifi.unizh.ch/mml/mduerst/papers/PS/FontComposition.ps.gz
Dates from 1995, but not outdated yet, I guess.
