FreeBSD 5 will currently only work on the 2.0 branch. You'll likely need to
roll your own kernel as the pre-compiled one is a bit dodgy in places.
I'm working on integrating xenbus at the moment as a background process, so
5.3 should work again on -unstable in the not too distant future. Once that
is done 6.0 shouldn't be far off.
