Xalan could be run without Xerxes, feeding it from other SAX or DOM sources=
. Performance characteristics will change, and some Xalan-specific features=
 might not be available (not sure if current status), but this was the inte=
nt.

Theoretically, we should have test modes which confirm this is true.

I haven't looked at it since rejoining, so I can't make that an unequivocal=
 statement.

Speaking of the Xalan 2.7.2 POM:

More specifically about its declared dependencies =96 does Xalan have a
runtime dependency on Xerces?  If it is not really the case, I suggest
Xerces should be declared as optional:
