Sounds like a job for ls-long ls-short and ls-plain in the ftpaccess file.
Assuming it's not a simple client config issue like telling the client to
use '-al' for the listing (SmartFTP and CuteFTP have the option, on some
sites I need to tell SmartFTP to NOT send the -al).
