Here is what I did:

As root, I copied /usr/bin/ls to /home/ftpdir/etc/ls,

then

using mknod I created /home/ftpdir/dev/null.

I hope this helps.

I'm getting the same thing.  What do you mean you copied /usr/bin/ls and 
/dev/null to the path?  I don't quite understand this.  Do you mean you 
just created a hard link with the -s option using ln?
