Assuming you were root when you chrooted, you would have to su to a non-root
user before running ls -l, in order to emulate what the server is doing.
The only other thing I can think of is to fire up a session, connect
trace/truss to the server, then run the ls and see if anything shows up in
the truss output. This assumes you have trace/truss on your OS, of course.
