Err... I remember having seen this very problem a year again, found the same
workaround as you. Nobody shared any wisdom about it so I let it drop; I am
not a X programmer so I am very unsure of myself in this area.

AFAICT, the app is starting minimized and its initial state is changed by code.
Wine is asking to the X driver if the display driver supports removing the iconic state,
when it answers No, meaning that the iconic state are not supported (I guess), Wine just 
leaves the app in its current (minimized) state. I don't know if it's the correct fix.

Managed mode is nice to use but it's nasty stuff to code. If you remember Alexandre
Julliard is planning to rewrite it completely...
