yes it is (I looked at it, and so did Patrik). To go further, I recompiled just
the snippet in a standalone .c file, and run with the values that made it failed
and of course it (the snippet) worked very well :(
so, I didn't spend much time trying to get the code fragment that exhibits the pb

also, compiling nonclient.c with gcc 2.91 but without -O2 option no longer shows the problem
I don't suggest not to use -O2 for gcc 2.91, but that may be an option
