PF/OpenBSD  + CARP  can do  load-balancing quite  easily  with keeping
session safe. 

Keepalived/LVS - GNU/Linux can do that too.

More  easy  to  maintain  than  proprietary blackbox  (like  Cisco  or
Alteon) and you can use simple 1U Server for that.
