Hi Nelly!
When you do the configure step, you can specify:
$ ./configure --prefix=<installation-path>
For instance, at my work machine, I have an alias "wget-config" which
expands to:
$ ./configure --prefix=/home/micah/opt/wget CFLAGS=-g
This is also covered in the INSTALL file within the source directory.
At home, I install to /opt/wget, which is owned by me; I never have to
become root to install wget from the source tree.
