Juan Jose,
Thanks for the response. However, it is inconsistent with page 204 of WEKA book which \
clearly says (at the first line under Nominal Attributes section) that "Before \
constructing a model tree, all nominal attributes are transformed into binary \
variables which are then treated as numeric." Unless M5 handles the transformation by \
itself...??

Thanks

M5 handles symbolic attributes. Only the class has to be numeric.

You can try M5P with "cpu.arff". One of the leafs is:

class =

~    -65.3063 *
vendor=honeywell,ipl,ibm,cdc,ncr,basf,gould,siemens,nas,adviser,sperry,amdahl +
~     43.8687 * vendor=adviser,sperry,amdahl +
~    -57.6292 * vendor=amdahl +
~      0.0162 * MMIN +
~      0.0092 * MMAX +
~      0.9105 * CACH +
~     -1.5458 * CHMIN +
~      1.3384 * CHMAX +
~   -118.5033

"vendor" is a symbolic attribute.

Best Regards,

knows if M5 takes care of transforming all nominal attributes into binary variables \
to treat them as numeric, or does the transformation has to be done apart by using \
the nominalToBinary filter? | In the last case, does anybody has an example of how to \
use this | filter? Also, does anybody has experimented on the performance of M5
