Not at the moment, sorry .. for most users, tar's built-in file splitting
   works well enough.

Currently, there's no way to do this in the filesystem backup module - the
only splitting it supports is that built into tar, which splits at fixed
sizes and doesn't guarantee that each part can be extracted separately.
I suppose a backup module that does its own splitting could be
implemented, but it would take a fair bit of work..

Is this really needed, when you can use the tar tf command to get the
     same info?

yes, if the tar is local, this information in a text file would be
redundant, but if the tar files are remotely it would be nice to have
a catalog somewhere, so you know, which files you need to download,

I think with a multi-part tar file you need to read them all anyway - a
single file in the backup may be split across multiple parts, and I don't
even think you can un-tar from a single part separately.

ok, so i need to ask my question different :)
could we have a way to split a remote backup in a way, that multiple tar
files are created, which can be separately unpacked? in my case, i have a
150gb partition with home directories. restoring a single file from this
giant backup file is a pain in the ass..
