I tried to analyse the use cases here:

I've not seen any place where @role=main was misused and I think the same
would be the case for <main>. At least I don't see why it would be misused
any more than the other semantic elements that were introduced such as
<article>, <header> and <aside>, so I don't see why they would make sense
to be supported while <main> doesn't.
