For basic web pages, even those with a lot of links, I have used Broken Link Checker \
at https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/broken-link-checker/nibppfobembgfmejpjaaeocbogeonhch.

It is a free plugin for Chrome. Even though I am a Firefox user, I found the plugin \
useful enough that I will load the page I want to check in Chrome so I can run the \
extension.

But sometimes I have to check manually, because while link checkers are nice for \

at <different address X>" or "this address now redirects to <address Y>", sometimes \
changes are more subtle. I go through our list of databases twice a year or so, to \
make sure things are still pointing where they're supposed to.

This is usually more a problem with small websites -- companies like EBSCO have a \
pretty stable interface by now and are good at seamlessly redirecting their old URLs \
to the new ones, but not everyone has the staff to do this, so you still need to \
check.

I formerly used the W3C automated link checker (https://validator.w3.org/checklink) \
but it doesn't play well with web pages that have huge numbers of \
automatically-generated links that redirect around your site (like, oh, pages built \
by LibGuides). It's a good tool and might be useful for you, depending on what \
you're checking. There are other automated link checkers around the Web.

Hi,

I'll be sorry to see this list disappear. However, there is nothing like a \
deadline. I've been meaning to ask a few questions but I'm constantly putting them \
aside because of other projects. I think this is the right list for these. I'm \
looking for some free or cheap reliable resources for the following. I had \
resources for these needs before but they have disappeared over the years.

  * What do you use to monitor changes in webpages?
  * What do you use to make sure all the external links you have on research guides \
on an intranet or a catalog are still good?
  * What are your favorite WordPress add-ins for a Wiki, Task Manager with \
recurring tasks, or other useful tools to manage or present information to users.

Thank you,

Martina Anders

CAUTION EXTERNAL EMAIL

Hi, maybe instead of looking for reasons to shut down this list we should be looking \
at ways of re-invigorating.

In the past I have been to shy of asking questions on this list because it seemed so \
erudite, or silent.

However since it recent rebirth it has seemed to be at the opposite end of the \
spectrum – a help desk for public libraries technology? Not sure if I mind. It is \
good that questions get answers, or guidance of how to look elsewhere.

How many subscribers are there?

I would be in favour of it continuing the existence of the WEB4LIB list.

Paul

Subject: [WEB4LIB] Proposal: closing and archiving Web4Lib

Hi,

In light of current discussion on this list, and following up on my post of last \
August [1], it is perhaps time for us to consider that discussion about web \
technologies specifically for libraries has come to a natural end - at least in this \
forum. Not, of course, because the web has gone away, but because it suffuses nearly \
all library technology. It is far from being the "new thing" as it was back when this \
mailing list was established.

There has been little discussion of library-specific web technology on this list \
since August, barring some job posting and CFPs. I also do not see signs of any \
particular effort to launch active discussions on such topics.

To put that last point another way: if you as list members want more discussion at \
the intersection of web tech and libraries, it is ultimately your responsibility to \
initiate it.

Otherwise, requests to unsubscribe can be sent to \
WEB4LIB-unsubscribe-request@LISTSERV.UC.EDU<mailto:WEB4LIB-unsubscribe-request@LISTSERV.UC.EDU> \
or handled at https://listserv.uc.edu/scripts/wa.exe?A0=web4lib<https://urldefense.com \
/v3/__https:/listserv.uc.edu/scripts/wa.exe?A0=web4lib__;!!OdqygGz-7UHvSw!scUCtdajk32a \

In any event, without the requests for technical assistance that one member has been \
making the past few months, total list traffic would have been very low and would \
largely consist of job and CFP postings that typically get widely broadcast.

Consequently, I submit the following proposal: that Web4Lib be closed at the end of \
May while arranging for its archives to be maintained indefinitely. If such a \
proposal spurs interest by members to post on the intersection of the web and \
libraries, great, but otherwise the list's time may have passed.
