The objective is to engage workshop participants in a full-throated
discussion of how best to resolve the friction experienced by users in
attempting to access key resources from any location, from any device.
There are many facets to the issues of authenticating users. How much
information about the user is required? How can the speedbumps be
minimized? Users face a complex and frequently confusing authentication
process, particularly when users are working outside of a library or
institutional network. From the standpoint of institutional infrastructure,
a number of work-around solutions have been implemented to address issues
caused by IP-authentication, such as proxy servers, but each work-around
presents its own set of issues and concerns.
This event is intended to bring together the broadest possible spectrum of
stakeholders from the information community to address every group's
concerns. What does campus IT think about the issues? Do their concerns
differ dramatically from those working with patrons in the library? How
should providers of information resources be approaching issues of access?
The complexity of satisfying the needs of all constituencies deserves an
intensive face-to-face discussion and *your* voice is needed.
