Hi Mark,
We don't a vision statement, but we did write some goals for the website to
keep in mind during redesign:
The main goals of the website are as follows:
-
Website design highlights research functions and provides a clear path
to core tasks. (For the purpose of design, we consider students and faculty
to be our primary users.)
-
Users can access online resources and information.
-
‘Ask a Librarian' button or contact information is visible during core
user tasks.
-
The Library website meets WCAG 2.0 AA accessibility guidelines (
http://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20/) and is regularly evaluated with the WAVE
tool (http://wave.webaim.org/).
-
Use responsive design to allow users to access the site with their
preferred devices.
There were a few talks at the 2016 edUi conference that might be helpful to
you. UNC Library shared their content guidelines (slide 27:
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1uyZYlCMuw8tkYbM0FvjTkRdiuyCxZEYihoTQPmdvhvY/edit?usp=sharing)
and overall content strategy from University of Arizona Library (
http://www.slideshare.net/steadfastlibrarian/content-strategy-for-naysayers)
Good luck with your redesign!

I've worked on a bunch of these and we never rolled-out some any kind of vision \
statement, but I would agree that this is probably useful future-proofing. A couple \
years down the road it might prevent sprawling. Rather than a statement, though, I \
think it's way more useful to establish a handful of axioms that all future \
content-making and design decisions must adhere to. Here are a couple I like that \
have wide-reaching implications:

* We are mobile-first: our content, design, and development will be \
