Laurie,

You'll need to find a SWF to MP4 (or iPod video) converter. There are some free \
tools, but finding a good one that (1)works, (2)is easy to use, (3)doesn't \
continually nag you to upgrade or lose functionality after 30 days, or (4)is not safe \
for your computer is rather difficult. Although I've probably found a few, certain \
applications work better for certain situations, so you'll be better off finding one \
for yourself. There are also retail applications. From a quick web search, the \
first result came up from an Adobe employee:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/captivate/articles/ipod.html \
<http://www.adobe.com/devnet/captivate/articles/ipod.html>
She suggests a retail product (which one would presume is guaranteed to work). I \
cannot confirm one way or another; although I have used video conversion tools, I \
have not attempted to created iPod compatible files. Good luck.

Colleagues-

We are beginning to create video tutorials in Adobe Captivate 3. We
would like to make these available via our podcast series. I've looked
at the publishing settings and it seems the only format available is
.swf which, unless I've missed something, will not be playable on iTunes
or video iPods. Has anyone had success incorporating Adobe Captivate
materials into their podcasts?

I am in the process of rewriting the guest card policy for our public
library system and would be interested in reviewing guest card policies
from other library systems. I am most interested in the one day use
cards primarily for computers and printing, but plan to address our fee
card policy as well.

What I am looking for are libraries that charge for a guest pass: How
much? What are the criteria? Do you issue a guest pass to regular
library card holders if they want more computer time? Do you issue a
guest pass to regular library card holders if their card is over the
fine limit? Etc. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

We consider those who do not qualify for a free library card to be
guests (unless they want to pay the out of county fee of $40 per year).
If a patron is a guest, they can obtain a temporary computer usage card
for $1 a week. The temporary card gives the patron the ability to use
our wireless service or use our public computers. They cannot check any
materials out on the card.

If the patron already has a library card and has too many fines to use
the computer then they can still get a temporary card for $1 a week.

Hope this helps,
Anthony

Posted to Dig_Ref and Web4Lib (apologies for the duplication)

We are contemplating a RefWorks subscription and are curious if anyone with RefWorks \
would respond to the following questions:

What is the workload for administering RefWorks - especially: How much time to you \
devote to user account maintenance? And if you provide other technical support, we'd \
appreciate any elaboration.

How have you dealt with students or faculty who have graduated or left your \
institution? Have people complained about losing access to their citations? Or are \
you able to continue providing access in some manner? Please explain. Do you explain \
to people using RefWorks ahead of time (at what point and how) that they will not \
have access if they leave unless their next institution provides RefWorks? Do you \
have some way of knowing who with accounts is leaving and then do you share methods \
of how they can download and take their citations with them (also at what point and \
how)? We're concerned about our alumni population as well as faculty who retire or \
go elsewhere.

Who at your institution provides the teaching support for RefWorks (and possibly \
other bibliographic citation management tools) and how extensive is the support \
(handouts, web pages, whole class sessions, etc.)? We currently provide very \
in-depth support from the library for EndNote and we're wondering what others do to \
support RefWorks.

Many thanks,
Jennifer

The philosophy of "your values don't match my values so they must mean
you are stupid and I am right" is a particularly arrogant one, in my
mind.

Ross, I agree with that statement but disagree that it applies to Carr.
He has the humility to talk about what he believes Google is doing *to
him* as well as to others (and for that matter, phrase it as a
question). When Carr writes, "I'm not thinking the way I used to think,"
I identify -- in part because he isn't standing on a mountaintop
sneering at the scatterbrained masses. I blogged about this today...
after pushing myself to read for a couple of hours, even though the
laptop beckoned from the next room.

I don't agree with everything Carr says, but I agree with the way he
says it.
