I installed vnc (the latest version) on rh5.1 and had no problem for linux to see \
win95 but the problem is under w95 when I tried to use vncviewer to see linux I could \
not make it work. Under linux I used vncviewer and got something like "New 'X' \
desktop is linux.uic.edu:1" (I already gave a password for the server), then if I \
went to w95 and try "vncviewer ipaddress of the linux machine:1" and got \
message:"failed to connect the server", I did not even get the chance to type in the \
password. If I tried linux.uic.edu then I got the message: "Did you type in the host \
name correctly?", either way I could not get to X windows from w95, could anyone out \
there help me out?

Subject: Chording to emulate middle button?
I need that third button emulation in the Windows95 VNC client.
I'll try some patches, if anyone has any.
I have a Logitech three-button mouse on my Windows95 machine, but I've
mapped the middle button to "iconify window", so it doesn't get through
to the VNC client. I can, of course, turn off the special handling of
the middle button and it does work fine under the VNC client; however, I
really like having my middle button for iconifying Win95 windows.
I have a regular X-server for Win95 that lets me chord the two outer
buttons to stand for the middle one; I'd like the Win95 VNC client to be
able to do the same thing so that I have a consistent user interface.

Subject: Twm cursor warping eludes VNC Win95 client
I use the twm "warping" feature that lets me use keyboard characters to
move ("warp") the cursor between windows. Unfortunately, this moving of
the cursor isn't noticed by my Win95 VNC client - the little dot stays in
the original window, while my "real" cursor moves to the new window,
along with keyboard focus.
Things work mostly fine until I go to move the mouse for something, or
until I SHIFT-TAB to a Win95 application and SHIFT-TAB back, or until
some scheduled Win95 application pops up a window on my screen and then
disappears. Any of these things cause the "real" cursor to distractingly
jump back to the original window, where the little dot is, abandoning the
window where I was typing and taking keyboard focus with it. Suddenly
I'm typing back in the original window, not in the window that I had
warped into. I can re-warp back to the other window, but it still
won't take the "little dot" cursor with it to make the warp "permanent".
I don't know how the Linux VNC server can tell the Win95 VNC client that
the cursor has "warped" to a different place; but, I wish it could.
The same problem happens when I warp the cursor into the twm icon
manager using the keyboard; the "little dot" cursor doesn't follow.

The VNC server for Windows will generally be slower than the VNC server
for X, because more guesswork is involved in tracking screen updates.
If the CPU usage stays consistently at 100%, then I suspect you have
either:
a) Ticked 'Poll Full Screen'
OR
b) Ticked one of 'Poll Foreground Window' or 'Poll Window Under Cursor',
without having 'Poll Console Windows Only' ticked.
Is this the case?

I've done it in a SUN / Solaris box via xdm (dtlogin, CDE
equivalent of xdm, as a matter of fact). /etc/inittab spawns as many
vncservers as I wish, all of them querying localhost (XDMCP), and
there's a boot script that launches a dtlogin / xdm instance that
provides login / X sesssion services for those VNC virtual X terms. I
suggest "man xdm" for details ...
Of course, there are security concerns here ... specially if
you take into account that anynone (vncviewer) can connect to a server
if the "visitor" knows the password to be granted access. I don't have
that many users who would like to use VNC features. So, I run one VNC
server instance for each of those users. Each instance uses a password
file stored into the home dir of the user the instance is intended to
serve. An entry to start a VNC server instance in /etc/inittab would
look like
d1:234:respawn:/usr/local/vnc/Xvnc :1 -geometry 1024x768 \
-rfbauth /home/USER/.vnc/passwd -rfbport 5901 -query localhost
-once -rfbwait 120000 -desktop 'USER Setup' > \
/usr/local/vnc/run/Xvnc:1 2>&1
This setup also has the advantage of letting one customize the
X resources (e.g. geometry) used in a VNC server instance, meeting
user preferences without messing with others ones.
The drawback of having memory allocated for all of those VNC
servers ruuning is lessened by *nix "unused" memory swapping. No big
concerns from my point of view ...
Ok, it's a limitted aproach, but apart from this scenario I
can't see others where it would be feasible to help users from logging
in and manually running a vncserver instance.

I have noticed now that maybe the server do no checking of the font path,
but startx or another wrapper does it. So indeed Xvnc's behaviour is the
same as the behaviour of any X server. I suggest that Bruce's patch is
applied to vncserver. It will certainly be done in the Debian distribution.

Thank you for the patch, Bruce! It saves me some work (I was going to do the
same). I don't consider it to be a hack, it seems to be the correct solution
(apart from fixing all X servers).

I believe that you could use inetd to run the server on a port you put
in /etc/services. Inetd has a configuration file. You could play with
it. I would make it run as a fairly low user. You can use sudo to run
programs you want that user to have access to as root.
