You can use PlanetRemote
(http://www.planetdns.net/client/new/pdnsrem32v116.exe). It includes a
station locator broadcast service that works together with the PlanetRemote
viewer (a VNC compatible viewer that's included) to enumerate PC's on your
network by name.

There are other tools such as VNC Scan (http://www.vncscan.com) that
basically do the same, but it scans local IP ranges for TCP port 5900 usage
and then uses MS Windows RPC services to identify the local computer name at
that IP. The drawback is that it is relatively slow.

The added bonus with the PlanetRemote viewer is that it includes Wake-On-LAN
support so I can just double-click a computer that was previously enumerated
(but now turned off), and it turns on the computer and connects to VNC
automatically (MagicPacket WOL support must be enabled in the BIOS, of
course).

The other nice thing is that PlanetRemote includes a VNC multiplexor plug-in
that allows you to connect to any number of computers that are behind a
router using a single port forwarding arrangement on your router (it uses
TCP Port 6800, and you must connect using a web browser). You don't need to
configure VNC on any of the workstations any differently.

A related but more general question. I have a home network with several PCs
running WinXP. They're behind a router connected to VDSL. If I let each PC
use DHCP from the router, I have no way of knowing the addresses of them. So
I set each one up with a fixed address instead and edit the hosts file on
each to reflect those addresses. Beside setting up some kind of internal DNS
are there any other options? I can't imagine most home users are
sophisticated enough to do that. I'm not sure how involved that is either.
Then again maybe most home users don't even try to contact other PCs on
their internal LAN.

Good question Tom.

While I'm so new on VNC, I'm quite intrigued with it.  I think the option of
multiple icons for each machine you're connecting to is a good option.

To add "complexity" to your question though, I try to connect to multiple
machines which uses a DHCP connection/s from their ISP.  In this case, IP
addresses are subject to change regularly.  I'm trying, but not successful
yet, to use some kind of an install-shield that: when a remote machine
launches VNC-server, it sends out (sends me via email or something?) the IP
address of the machine's connection.  Any "takers" to this challenge out
there?
