I don't think anyone is currently working on this.  You might want to
contact the people working on kvim, there might be a few things in
common (although the out-of-process solution probably makes a lot of
things work differently).

That's the good kind of itch! :-)

I hope you manage to do it in such a way that the GTK2 changes can be
included separately from the bonobo support.

Doing this work will probably uncover a few problems in the interface
between the generic GUI code and the system-specific GUI code.  Please
take some time to make this work nice.  There are already too many
#ifdefs in the generic code.

I'm going on holidays today, I'm afraid I can't give you any help the
coming weeks.
