Veritas DBED provides a nice mechanism to do it using just regular 
online backup mode (it sets all tablespaces into online backup mode and 
takes them out when done). I used to do that, create a checkpoint, 
detach a mirror, mount the filesystem, then take the backup of the 
checkpoint and undo it all. (combined with VVR).

There's more than one way to do it without resorting to taking the DB 
offline. ymmv.
