The first thing that you need to know is that a SAN media server is licensed 
to only back itself up. SSO is a complete seperate issue. If you intend on 
using a MEDIA server with the SSO option, then that is another completely 
different option, but all need to be licensed correctly. You can use the SAN 
media server or a regular MEDIA server with SSO, but again, all need to be 
properly licensed.
Usually, the SAN media server is for designated applications, such as an 
Oracle server, Exchange server, or something similar. You can also cut BCV's 
to this server and back it up with the SAN media Server. 
With a MEDIA server, you can backup clients, other media servers, itself 
etc. 
I am not sure if this adds to your frustration, or helps with your problem, 
but thats what the difference in the SAN media server and the MEDIA server 
is.
