Agreed.  If the tapes were overwritten the data is gone forever, bye bye.
And you should also be wary about giving them the tapes if they have other
customer's data on them.

Hi Dave,

If tapes were overwritten, I think, you could
do NOTHING.

Maybe the have duplicated copy of that tapes ?
In that case, even if catalog data expired,
tapes can be imported and catalog updated.
Otherwise you can't restore any data :-(
