Windows XP joined to an active direcotry domain has some fairly rigid
requirements.

If it's not configured properly, you're going to see exactly what you're
describing here.

For example, you typically ned to have a properly configured active
directory authorized DNS server, and that DNS server MUST be the first DNS
server listed in your network configuration.
