I can understand that, although personally I could live with a slightly 
changed version of grace.
I'm not saying you should, but just that you could. Well, at least I 
think it would be a smallish change but I might be wrong.

If you'd change it so that varnish would return the stale page also to 
'the first user during grace' while retrieving and storing
the fresh one it would already do what I need.
I would lower the ttl's of the objects and use a longish stale period 
and be very happy with the result.

But I don't know if that would create serious havoc with other people or 
introduce other problems.
Anyway, just a thought.
