Gentoo's kernel is pretty heavily patched, and seems to be pretty aggressively 
tuned for responsiveness. i wouldn't be surprised if the "more usable 
feeling" can be largely attributed to this, and perhaps the set up of other 
rather low-level items such as the linker chain.

compile time options of applications do help performance, no doubt about it, 
but IME it's usually not all that visible to the user on the wall clock 
unless doing things that really push the computer's performance ...
